The MoodMeter check-in, step 2: choosing a word for the feeling

Background

Most mental health support at school is set up for serious situations, and you have to book an appointment. Most students won’t do that for normal, everyday stress. I wanted to make something quick and anonymous they could use on any day.

How it works

You start by joining a group, like your school. A check-in takes about a minute. You say whether your mood is positive or negative, pick a word that describes it, and write how it feels.

There’s a prompt in the morning to set an intention for the day, and one in the evening to look back on it. There’s also a streak counter and a map of anonymous check-ins from other students. You don’t need an account or a name, and crisis hotlines are linked in the app.

Study

MoodMeter is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We’re running a study with groups of students through January 2027 to see how much it helps.
